This terrestrial crab species has widespread distribution, being found in many island of the Pacific Ocean (including Taiwan, Micronesia, and Hawaii), Southeast Asia, Australia and islands of the Indian Ocean. Except Christmas Island, this crab species has a purplish carapace with pink pincers and legs. The blue variety is found only on Christmas Island. It is active during the day, and prefers wetter habitats, such as water seepages, springs and forest streams. It feeds mainly on fallen plant material. Like the Red Crabs, they undertakes a breeding migration to spawn into the ocean, however their numbers are not as large as the Red Crabs. The Blue Crabs on Christmas Island is very distinctive, having a porcelain blue body with pale blue hairy legs, and hair mats on both sides of the mouth parts. |
