The Giant Staircase
The Merced River from Little Yosemite Valley drops in two major steps, resulting in two spectacular waterfalls... Nevada and Vernal Falls. Known as the "Giant Staircase", this geographical feature is the result of glacial movement causing dislocation of large blocks of granite from streambeds along point of weakness. It is also interesting to note that the vertical face of Nevada Fall is almost perpendicular to that of Vernal Fall... the different angles of the major fracture planes accounts of this angular landscape .
