Nearing the summit, the summit hut prominently stands out like a sore thumb. Many hikers have been caught ill prepared on the summit, and this hut have saved many lives from exposure when the weather turns ugly. The highest building in North America, it was built in 1909 with funding from the Smithsonian Institute. Wood for the building was hauled up by mules, stone was broken, shaped, riveted and cemented with hand tools. | ||||
