13 May 2004

  basecamp
bright sunshine on this morning, a stark contrast from the previous gloomy and wet day... opportunity for us to bask in warmth and to dry out our wet gear

  gang in tent
a hearty hot breakfast to start our day

  the way
tracing out our potential route up the rocky spur in our quest for the summit

  view to the top
for a short period, the sky was clear enough for us to see towards the top

  guide's hut
it may seem haphazardly built, but this broken looking hut is a sturdy shelter for the guides and others that may have been stranded on the mountains from bad weather

  theresa in tent
enjoying this rare moment of good weather on the mountains

  teh in tent
what better way to bask in the sun... in the comfort of one's own tent

  packing stores
consolidating and packing the stores to be carried up to high camp

  acclimatization trek
this day is for acclimatization and to load ferry gear to high camp

  rocks
the initial climb beyond the timberline is over a scree hillock

  looking up
still a long way to go as Yip and Clifton studies the route beyond; visible in the near distance below is base camp

  struggle
the thin atmosphere makes climbing an effort for Paul

  rest stop
this large granite slab characterizes the initial section of our climb toward high camp

  paul
Paul taking a short break as he makes his way up the giant granite face

  monolith
more vistas of the surrounding plains open as we steadily gained altitude

  snow bound
all too soon we hit the snow line

  bad weather
the weather started turning for the worse as we climbed higher

  the vibrator
our vibration specialist testing the vibes of the mountains

  nearing highcamp
it was snowing as we neared highcamp

  at highcamp
Mike and myself managed to complete our climb to high camp on this acclimatization day

  going down
after securing our gear to be stored at high camp, we started making our way back to base camp

  rock climbing
it is not easy to down-climb with rigid plastic boots on this granite slab... as Mike found out

  mist
a typical evening ritual... the mist drifting towards base camp
